Dr. Wellman was born and raised on a 4th generation sheep and cattle ranch that began its legacy in 1912 in Northwest Colorado. Having a lifelong love of big mountains and all animals, it was only providential that he become a veterinarian (CSU class of '84) and began his career performing equine embryo transfer and led him to practice in several Western states and culminating in his journey in 2012 to The Last Frontier. He loves practicing in Alaska and he and his family have found their forever home here.
Dr. Wellman is blessed to share the Alaska dream with the love of his life and best friend, Catherine, his five (mostly grown) children, four grandkids in Texas (so far), a reclusive Flemish giant, rescued husky mix, Sophie, and a beautiful but quite neurotic GSP, Sadie, whom the jury is still very much out on!
His favorite endeavors outside of medicine are being outdoors in all the weather Alaska can throw at him, especially at his favorite place on the planet, his cabin in Slana with Wrangell-St. Elias NP at his back (and front) yard. He enjoys snowmachining, hunting, fishing, and reading in front of a fire of his provision, with said folks above.
