Dr. Christopher G. Byers completed his undergraduate studies at Colorado State University, earning a Bachelor Science degree in Animal Sciences as a University Honors Scholar. He earned his DVM degree from Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine. He is board certified in veterinary emergency/critical care medicine and small animal internal medicine. He is also a Certified Veterinary Journalist. Prior to relocating to Nebraska, Dr. Byers served as Director of Intensive Care at VCA Veterinary Referral Associates in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He also held the position of Adjunct Professor at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia, and at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland.
Originally from New Hampshire, Dr. Byers has called Omaha home since 2011. He was Nebraska's first board certified veterinary emergency/critical care and small animal internal medicine specialist, joining the team of Midwest Veterinary Specialty Hospital (MVSH). He was also an Adjunct Professor at Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2015, VCA acquired MVSH that evolved into VCA MidWest Veterinary Referral Emergency and Referral Center (VCA MVREC). From May 2015 until June 2019, Dr. Byers served as Medical Director. In September 2021, he left his full-time role at VCA MVREC to pursue roles as a teleconsultant with VET.CT and in veterinary education. In September 2024, he rejoined VCA MVREC in a full-time clinical capacity.
Dr. Byers is the Co-Editor of the textbooks, Feline Emergency & Critical Care Medicine and Canine Emergency & Critical Care Medicine. He has also published chapters and articles in numerous textbooks and peer-reviewed medical journals, and is a renowned international speaker. Dr. Byers's clinical areas of interest are hematology, immunology, sepsis, and endocrinology.
