I have wanted to be a veterinarian for as long as I can remember. I was the clichéd little child forever bringing home injured and stray kittens and puppies. Life had other plans for me however, and due to a variety of reasons, I ended up enrolling in medical school. I followed this up by completing a residency in Internal Medicine in Detroit MI, and am still board certified and licensed to practice human medicine; I am the only MD-DVM in the state of New Mexico. However all through my human medicine career, I never gave up thinking ‘what if’, as far as pursuing veterinary medicine. I finally decided to take that chance in 2010, and was accepted at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Veterinary school provided an interesting opportunity to compare the principles of medicine across species. At the end of it I am very glad I made the change. I never take for granted how fortunate I am in being able to pursue my dream career, and when people ask me what I would be doing if I wasn’t in my current career, I tell them I am already doing it!

A little background on me- I was born in India and spent the first few years of my life there. When I was in middle school, my family relocated to Jakarta, Indonesia. Though the move took us away from familiar places and people, I look back on it as a very positive experience-it gave me a chance to learn more about the world other than my little corner of it. I was enrolled in an international school, with students and staff from all over the world, and interacting with them really broadened my horizons. I eventually returned to India for higher studies, followed by a move to the United States in 2005.

In my free time I enjoy reading all kinds of books. I am also a movie buff, especially scary movies!. I love to travel and learn about different cultures, and hope to see as much of the world as I can in my lifetime. I have visited 5 of the 7 continents and the remaining two are on my bucket list! I also love learning languages, because I feel being able to speak to someone in the language they are most comfortable with can build a much stronger relationship. I am fluent in English, Hindi and Indonesian. I am currently trying to learn Spanish, so feel free to teach me a word or two!

I enjoy the mix of cases that we see in our hospital. It is always great to see pets that are well, but also very gratifying to work with the complex medical or surgical cases. I have the unique advantage of being able to use my background in human medicine to help manage challenging veterinary cases. I also have an interest in animal behavior, since I feel that a multi modal approach that includes addressing medical as well as behavioral concerns, leads to a much more satisfying owner-pet relationship.
