VCA's Feline Hyperthyroid Treatment Center (FHTC) at Black Mountain Animal Hospital is proud to offer thyroidectomy as a treatment option for hyperthyroid cats. The service offers a thyroid scan prior to surgery to define the location and biological activity of hyper-functional thyroid tissues. With these results, a rational surgical plan and time line can be reached.
If possible, preparation for thyroidectomy includes medical stabilization with methimazole or other medications used to stabilize the hyperdynamic state that defines hyperthyroidism. The patient is generally released home the day of surgery, with a recheck exam the following day. Follow up exam occurs one week and one month post surgically at FHTC. Thereafter, follow-up is defined by your regular veterinarian. All results acquired at FHTC will be forwarded to your regular veterinarian.
Rapid recovery and stabilization after surgery is the expectation. Specifics of the surgery, recovery and remission time will be discussed in detail at consultation and beyond.
