Dr. Owen Black grew up in Connecticut. At around the same time that he learned to walk, he developed a passion for skiing. This led him to attend high school at National Sports Academy in Lake Placid, NY. He skied competitively in men's freestyle for many years and ultimately fulfilled a lifelong dream of moving to Jackson, WY. After several years of skiing in Jackson, he met Leah, the love of his life. In 2001, the two moved to Portland, OR, where Dr. Black eventually earned an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science at Portland State University. Upon completion of his Bachelor's degree with honors, he was accepted into the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine and completed his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2009.
After graduation, Dr. Black's love of skiing and life in Wyoming brought him back to the area. In the years since, he has worked as a mixed animal practitioner in Star Valley, Idaho Falls, and Jackson. His areas of interest are small animal surgery, orthopedics, and alternative treatments for aging pets. Dr. Black values having great relationships with his clients and their pets. He strives to be thorough and provides detailed and accessible information to pet owners.
In his spare time, Dr. Black enjoys skiing, motocross, and adventures of all kinds in the backcountry. He lives in Alpine with Leah, his daughter Avery, and their pets, Rue, Maggie, and Olaf.
