Spays and Neuters

Every year, thousands of stray and unwanted animals are euthanized in shelters across the United States. Many of these deaths are the avoidable result of owners failing to spay and neuter their pets. Pets’ unexpected offspring often end up in animal shelters and are not given the chance at happy, loving lives. Spaying

Spaying is a common surgical procedure performed on female cats and dogs. The process is called an ovariohysterectomy and involves removing the patient’s uterus and ovaries.

This procedure has many notable benefits, including:

• Preventing unwanted pregnancies
• Eliminating the risk of ovarian and uterine tumors
• Eliminating the possibility of uterine infections, a common and life-threatening condition in unspayed female cats and dogs

Neutering

During a neuter procedure, a male pet’s testicles are surgically removed, preventing the pet from being able to impregnate female pets. Aside from helping to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies, neutering has many important health benefits, including:

• Preventing unwanted reproduction
• Reducing the desire to roam (many of the pets that are hit by cars are unneutered males who have a strong desire to roam)
• Reducing territory marking (urine spraying/marking)
• Eliminating the risk of testicular and prostate tumors and reducing the risk other types of tumors in the reproductive system
