Local Medical Issues

One of several Richmond area issues which may affect the health of your pet is heartworm disease, which can affect both cats and dogs and is transmitted by mosquitoes (which thrive in our region). This is a serious cause for concern since the winter temperatures here do not get cold enough to kill mosquito eggs - making heartworm a year-round risk. Likewise the potential for flea and tick infestation is a higly common issue for both dogs and cats in this area. Again, the winter temperatures play a role - allowing these parasites to remain active - requiring prevention year-round. Other internal parasites are common for our pets - diseases can be passed from pet to pet and cause wide ranging problems. Allergies are also a year-round concern. Many dogs and cats suffer from skin and ear allergies, the signs of which include scratching, redness in the ears and scaly skin. The good news is that all of these parasites and diseases can easily be prevented by giving monthly medication to your pet!! Call VCA Total Care if you believe your pet may be suffering from one of these problems or to inquire about the best prevention for your pet.

American Animal Hospital Association

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) sets the standard for quality veterinary care for companion animals. As an accredited hospital, we voluntarily uphold the Association's high standards in 18 different areas and are routinely evaluated on over 900 different standards of veterinary care. Not all animal hospitals are accredited, and we are proud to be amongst only 12-15% of veterinary hospitals that hold this honor.
